LIKONI CHANNEL CABLE CAR CONSTRUCTION KICK-OFF IN KENYA

Construction of likoni channel cable car worth Sh5.8 billion set to kick-off soon  in Kenya.

The Likoni channel project which has been on delay for so long will kick-off next week. It process will involve physical survey of the sites for the landing stations. It will also have a mast built on the two sides of the Likoni channel.

The landing will go over the road and all cable cars will come under the landing station. Trapos are the sponsors of the project, and they got into a concession agreement with Kenya Ferry Services (KFS) last December.

Trapos Limited communication officer Mutahi Munyi said “This week, there will be officers on the ground. He also said that they will do the pre-engineering of equipment in readiness for the take-off.”

KFS Managing Director, Bakari Gowa said “The two major masts will be put on that land. He said the masts and the landing stations are the major installations in this project. ”

The project is awaiting a request for the Cabinet before pushing through. It will also require a land which will have a clean bill of health use/permit.

The construction will be done by C&C company, which will be in-charge of the infrastructure that include two 90 metres high masts and two landing stations. C&C company will work hand in hand with Doppelmayr Group who are in charge of the technological part of the project.

Doppelmayr Group will also transfer the the technology and operate the system with Likoni Cable Express Limited.

The project which is worth Sh5.8 billion will be build under the Public Private Partnership Act of 2012. It will also provide about 500 local jobs for residents in the area.

Once completed it will operate seven days per week, with a crossing time of less than three minutes.
